The New Edition Story Set’s Off Biopic Trend
Watch out, competition! 2017 is the
year of the biopics and The New Edition Story has set the standard. The 3-part
miniseries about the iconic R&B boy band that aired on BET, resulted in
record breaking ratings. The world fell in love with Ronnie, Ricky, Bobby,
Mike, Ralph and Johnny all over again. 28.4 million viewers were tuned in to
experience the group’s highest of highs and lowest of lows. This is BET’s
highest rated and most watched telecast in five years. The special was also the
number one trending topic on Twitter and Facebook.
The New Edition Story had an explosive
turnout, which means upcoming biopics have a tough act to follow. Word on the
street is... Jodeci is next in line. Former group member Dalvin DeGrate
confirmed on Instagram that the script for the film is finished and ready for
production. VH1 plans on airing the movie before the end of 2017.
The 90’s trend doesn’t stop there. BET
plans on making a scripted series based on the 90’s game changing rapper Nas.
The Queens, New York lyricist took to Instagram that he is humbled by the
opportunity to share his story, “Sweet Dreams,” with the world. The series is
set to air this year. Will it have the same record shattering ratings as The
New Edition Story? We’ll just have to wait and see!
