Missouri Nominates First Gay Miss America
Missouri makes headlines this morning as they nominate the first openly gay Miss America. Erin O’Flaherty, 23, holds the nomination for the pageant to come.
She admits that being the first gay wasn’t her intention, “I'm on cloud nine really just to be Miss Missouri. I don't know that I intended to be the first, but I am. So I'm very excited about it.”
Although she may not have had any idea that her nomination would make history, she is using her platform to bring awareness to the LGBT community, nonetheless.
She shares, “My focus of my year isn't going to be that I'm gay. It's certainly a big part of who I am, and I will be promoting it and raising awareness for the LGBT community.”
The pageant queen is focusing on suicide, a huge problem in the LGBT community, in hopes of bringing awareness to the issue. Another milestone for the LGBT community goes down in the books.
